Serious Questions

1. How many years have you been in sports and academia?

I have been within the school structure for 12 years and involved in sports for 30 years. I have a background in personal training at the gym, with experience in pilates. I am a certified spinning instructor and have been rated in Botswana as one of the top 5 instructors.

2. What habits or strategies do you recommend for success in sports?

Passion is paramount in sports and fitness. It’s essential to not just go through the motions, but to truly love what you do. Embrace the discomfort of challenging exercises and allow yourself to grow to enjoy them. It takes 21 days to form a habit, and once ingrained, it becomes second nature.

When it comes to achieving success, remember that talent may be innate, but fitness is a conscious choice. Strive to be fitter than those around you, regardless of your natural running, breathing abilities, and more. The foundation for fitness is equal for everyone.

3. What are the most common mistakes students make in sport and how to avoid them?

Avoiding self-doubt is crucial in sports. Doubting yourself can weaken your performance even before you step onto the field. Whether it’s during trials, training, or a match, it’s important to stay confident and focused on your abilities. To combat self-doubt, remain true to yourself and communicate with your coaches. Drawing strength and knowledge from them can help boost your self-assurance and enhance your performance.

4. How can students use feedback from assessments to improve their performance?

It’s essential to evaluate the feedback you receive and determine its relevance. For instance, if you are told that you are not passing the ball effectively, consider the specific situation in which you should pass, such as when you are under pressure. If feedback suggests that you are holding onto the ball too long, but you do not see it, take the time to identify where this behavior occurs and make the necessary adjustments. If you are unsure about how to implement the feedback, do not hesitate to seek clarification from your coach.

5. How can students effectively balance academic and extracurricular pressure?

Make the most of your free time at school by using it wisely to stay on top of your classwork. It’s important to cover as much schoolwork as possible during these breaks so that you can give your best effort on the sports field as well. Both academics and sports require dedication, and neglecting one can lead to problems down the line. Create a timetable to structure your day, identifying when assignments are due and using free periods for studying. Focus on your sports commitments during school hours, but make time at home to rest and study in the evenings. It’s crucial to avoid wasting any time at school and stick to your schedule. Communication with your coaches is key – share any academic struggles or challenges you are facing, as they may have resources or strategies to assist you in balancing your academic and athletic responsibilities.

Fun Questions

1. If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?

I would like to duplicate myself. Having a clone would allow me to accomplish more by coaching on multiple sides simultaneously.

2. If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three things would you bring with you?

My wife, a laptop with gospel music, peanuts (narrowing down the last item was a very serious decision that took a while).

3. What’s your favourite movie?

My all time favourite movie is called Facing The Giants.

4. What’s the best vacation you’ve ever been on?

Three years ago, my family and I visited Victoria Falls, where we enjoyed three uninterrupted days of bonding in one of the natural wonders of the world.

5. What’s your hidden talent?

I can knit jerseys. I was taught how to crochet by my grandmother.
